We All Have Work, Let No One Shirk

Many more people could ride out the storm-tossed waves in their economic lives if they had
their . . . supply of food . . . and were debt-free. Today we find that many have followed this counsel in reverse: they have at least a year’s supply of debt and are food-free.”

President Thomas S. Monson, “That Noble Gift— Love at Home,” Church News, May 12, 2001, 7.

The prophets of our church have been counseling members to have a 1 year supply of food and to get out of debt for years. The hubbs and and I have been working diligently to get out of debt. We paid off and cancelled our one and only credit card last year. I was so happy I cried when we pulled up the zero balance on the statement. We are now working toward getting his student loan paid off. If we have our way, it will be done this summer. I cannot express the sense of peace we feel as we get these things paid off and out of our life.

We are also working on our almost non-existent food storage. Our church almost makes it too easy for people to meet their goals of 1 year food storage. A few weeks ago, I looked over the order form and chose the things we wanted to add to our food storage. Then once a month, the cannery cans 3-4 items from the order sheet. So, you get your stuff gradually. This is really easy on the budget too, since you only pay for what you get that night. The catch? (if you really want to call it that) is that when you work at the cannery, you can for ALL orders.

The things that we canned last night were:
Refried beans
Potato Flakes
Oats
Hot Cocoa
Dried Milk

All in all we canned over 230 #10 cans of all of that stuff. I have to tell you, it was so much fun! My job was to fill the cans and get them ready to be sealed. The work is VERY fast paced, and it only took 2 hours to can, seal, sort and clean up. You get to wear an attractive hair net and a plastic apron. I. looked. so. cute.

Again, the sense of peace I felt for working on our food storage and doing what the Lord has asked us to do is more than words can say.

May the Lord bless you in your efforts today.

Just stopping in from SITS!

Thank you for this reminder. I completely agree...if we had our supply of food and were debt-free, it would certainly make a huge difference!

I have nothing. I always joke with my coworker that I am coming to her place when the world ends, because she is well prepared.

My Hubby & I's first official date was to the cannery. He had signed up to fill orders and talked me in to going with. It was fun. We are pretty well set I am a horrible hoarder and what I don't have my mom does :)

I too need to do a much better job here. As long as we have jolly ranchers, licorice, and cold cereal in our food storage, hubby will be happy. (how do I store my favorites, crab legs, ??)
Thank for reminding me to get busy.

I'm coming over from Blog Stalkers Unite, asking for your help. I am in the running for a round trip airfare paid ticket to Connecticut, to meet a friend I became acquainted with through blogging. She is a super fun person and is holding this contest. I entered a funny story titled "Grapejuice Floaties, Now Marry Me." The person whose story receives the most votes will win a trip to meet this generous lady, whom I'm hoping to meet. The voting ends tonight I believe. I am ahead for now but there is a story coming up from behind out of nowhere and I would so, so, appreciate your help. Her blog is www.becausemomsaidso.blogspopt.com and the voting is on the sidebar on the right. "Grapejuice, Floaties" Just go there and cast a vote for me, please. Thanks so much-you're awesome! ♥

It has been way too long since I worked at the dry pack cannery. I really need to get there!

And I am jealous about your almost having paid off student loans. We just started paying ours after 10 years of being in school. But at least my husband finally has his Ph.D.!
